How to use the Canva Position Tool and Layers
The Canva Position Tool and Layers panel help you align, space, arrange and stack elements so your design feels intentional instead of improvised.
Select an element in Canva, choose Position, then open Layers. Position gives you alignment, spacing and arrangement controls. Layers shows the complete stacking order so you can move an item above or below another element.
What does the Position tool do in Canva?
The Position tool controls where selected elements sit on the page and how they relate to one another.
Use it when you need to align objects, create even spacing or change which element appears in front. Instead of dragging everything by eye, you can make deliberate adjustments and keep the layout consistent.
Arrangement controls
- Move an element forward or backward.
- Send an element to the front or back.
- Open the Layers panel to see the complete order.
Alignment controls
- Align elements to the left, centre or right.
- Align elements to the top, middle or bottom.
- Distribute selected elements more evenly.
Align first to create structure. Then review the spacing. Finally, open Layers to confirm that the visual hierarchy matches the message.
How do Layers work in Canva?
Every item in a Canva design sits on a layer. Elements near the front of the order appear above elements placed farther back.
The Layers panel gives you a complete view of that order. Therefore, it is especially useful when several objects overlap or when a hidden element becomes difficult to select directly on the canvas.
Use Layers to
- Find objects that are hidden behind other elements.
- Move textures above a background container.
- Keep shadows beneath the objects creating them.
- Place gradients behind text to improve readability.
Open Layers on desktop
- Select an element in your design.
- Choose Position in the editor toolbar.
- Select Layers.
- Drag items higher or lower in the list.
Tap the current design page and choose Layers from the available options. The panel looks different from desktop, but it serves the same purpose.
How to use Position and Layers step by step
Follow this order when a design feels uneven, crowded or difficult to edit.
- Select the element you want to adjust. Click the text, shape, image or graphic directly on the canvas.
- Open Position. Use the editor toolbar to open the arrangement and alignment controls.
- Align the main objects. Create a clear edge, centre line or visual anchor before adjusting smaller gaps.
- Review the spacing. Distribute repeated elements evenly when the design needs a consistent rhythm.
- Open Layers. Check the complete stacking order and locate any object that is hidden or difficult to select.
- Drag elements into the correct order. Move textures, text, containers, gradients and shadows until every item appears where it should.
- Preview the finished design. Check visibility, hierarchy and readability at the size your audience will actually see.
The goal is not simply to organise the layer list. The order should guide attention toward the most important message.
A simple layer order example
Imagine a design with three items: a texture, a background container and a text block.
When the texture is above the container
The texture remains visible and adds detail. Meanwhile, the text can stay above both elements so the message remains easy to read.
When the texture is below the container
The container may cover the texture completely. As a result, the detail disappears and the composition can feel flatter.
A practical stacking order
- Top: text and essential foreground graphics
- Middle: textures, highlights and supporting details
- Lower: containers, photos and gradients
- Bottom: backgrounds and full page colour blocks
When the design is not behaving
Most layer problems come from the stacking order, grouping or selecting the wrong object.
An element has disappeared
Open Layers and move the missing item above the element covering it.
You cannot select the right object
Use Layers to select the item from the list instead of trying to click through overlapping objects.
Several items move together
Check whether the objects are grouped. Ungroup them before adjusting their position individually.
The spacing feels inconsistent
Select the repeated items together and use the spacing controls instead of moving each one separately.
A shadow appears on top
Move the shadow beneath the main object so it supports the composition rather than covering it.
Text is difficult to read
Place a subtle gradient or container behind the text, then keep the text at the top of the layer order.
