Want designs that feel elevated and tactile? Textures add depth, mood, and polish so your posts stop looking flat. Here’s the simple flow I use across carousels, flyers, and headers.

1) Open Your Design ➔ Start fresh or continue

Kick off with a new file or open an existing project where you want a more intentional, tactile look.

Why this matters

  • Prevents flat, template-like outcomes.
  • Sets up structure for subtle depth.
  • Improves brand feel without clutter.
Quick steps
  1. Create or open your Canva file.
  2. Decide where texture helps (backgrounds, shapes, overlays).
  3. Duplicate the page to compare before/after.

2) Find Textures ➔ Search for the right vibe

Use Elements to discover textures that match your brand mood.

Search terms

  • “Textured background”
  • “Grunge texture”
  • “Paper texture”
  • “Fabric background”
  • “Noise overlay”
Pro tip: pick graphics (not photos) for cleaner scaling and tinting.
Quick steps
  1. Open Elements and search your term.
  2. Choose graphics that tile or scale well.
  3. Save 3–5 favorites to a brand folder.

3) Add & Position ➔ Cover, tile, or mask

Place your texture where it supports content instead of competing with it.

What to do

  • Drag texture on canvas → stretch to full bleed or tile.
  • Mask inside shapes for control.
  • Keep type zones clean for readability.
Quick steps
  1. Add graphic to canvas.
  2. Scale or duplicate to cover background.
  3. Use soft shadows for depth.

4) Adjust Layers ➔ Position above what you want textured

Anything under the texture layer takes on the effect. Use the Position panel to control order and opacity.

Controls

  • Bring texture Forward above target elements.
  • Opacity 5–20% for subtle grain.
  • Duotone filter to color-match brand.
Quick steps
  1. Open Position and adjust layer order.
  2. Lower transparency to taste.
  3. Fine-tune with color filters.
