Canva Basics Part 4 ➝ Grouping & Ungrouping (Stop Dragging Elements One by One)

If you’re still moving text, icons, and shapes one at a time, this is the fix. Grouping lets you treat multiple items like one piece so edits stay fast and layouts stay consistent.

What Grouping Does

Grouping lets you select multiple elements and move, resize, and edit them as a single unit.

What it changes

  • You move multiple items at once
  • You keep layouts aligned
  • You resize elements together
  • You save time on edits
Great for
  • Footer bars and headers
  • Icon + label sets
  • Callouts, badges, and buttons
  • Carousel slide layouts

Why It Saves Time

Grouping sounds simple, but it removes a lot of tiny, repetitive work that slows you down.

You stop doing this

  • Dragging 6 elements one by one
  • Re-aligning after every small move
  • Fixing spacing because one item shifted

You start doing this

  • Move the whole layout in one click
  • Resize a set without breaking spacing
  • Duplicate a block and keep it consistent

How to Group

Do this once and you’ll use it every day.

Steps

  1. Select the elements you want.
  2. Right click ➜ Group.
  3. Done. Now move them as one.
Quick tips
  • Use Shift to click multiple items fast.
  • Group whole “sections” (title + icon + line) so they stay together.
  • Name your groups in the Layers panel if a design gets busy.

How to Ungroup

Ungroup when you need to tweak one piece inside the set.

Steps

  1. Select your grouped elements.
  2. Right click ➜ Ungroup.
  3. Edit items individually.
When to ungroup
  • You need to change just one word or icon
  • You’re swapping one element (not the full block)
  • You want different spacing on one page

Common Issues

Quick fixes for the usual friction points.

“Group” is greyed out

  • You only have one element selected. Select 2 or more.
  • You may be inside a text edit mode. Click out, then select.

Things won’t select together

  • One item might be locked. Unlock it in Layers, then group.
  • Try drag selecting (click and drag a box over the items).
