Canva Hacks Part 12 ➝ How to Use Margins Like a Pro

Margins might seem like a small detail — but they make a big difference in how your design feels.

Whether you’re building carousels, lead magnets, headers, or mockups, using margins and rulers inside Canva keeps everything clean, aligned, and professional. And the best part? It only takes a few clicks to set up.

Why Margins Matter

Misaligned designs feel off — even if you can’t explain why.
Margins create visual balance and give your content room to breathe.
When spacing is consistent, your design feels more polished and easier to read.

How to Show Margins in Canva

  1. Go to the File menu (top left corner)

  2. Click Settings

  3. Select Show Margins

A visible margin box will appear around your canvas. This helps you keep content inside a safe boundary and avoid cutting off text or visuals.

Pro Tip ➝ Use Rulers and Guides

For even more precision, turn on rulers and custom guides:

  1. Go to FileSettings

  2. Click Show Rulers and Guides

  3. Click and drag from the ruler edges to place guides

  4. Hold Shift while dragging to lock to the nearest pixel

You can create your own grid system for layouts, carousels, or brand templates. These guides do not show in your final design — they’re just for layout help.

The Result

  • Clean spacing

  • Visually aligned elements

  • Less clutter

  • A more professional overall design

Using margins is one of the easiest ways to take your Canva designs from amateur to polished — without needing design experience.
